The Yamaha Freego was released by Yamaha onto the Vietnamese scooter market in 2020 as an alternative to the Yamaha NVX for customers perceiving the latter as a masculine, heavy and aggressive style scooter targeting in general the male market. The Yamaha NVX received a “cult following” of sorts from a niche market of Vietnamese customers, however given its general poor quality it’s sales were disappointing and did not meet up to Yamaha’s forecast expectations.

Additionally, both the NVX 125 cc and 155 cc models were found to be too big and heavy for some of its potential customers which affected the male segment of the market who adopted the famous and long running Nouvo series. One could say in a way that the Yamaha Freego filled this gap and overtook that lost segment who were left with no alternative other than the fast ageing Yamaha Nouvo 6.
